From November 19 to 23, 2012, the CMPM 1104 Class attended the Change Module in Montreal, Canada. International management guru Henry Mintzberg lectured on Corporate Strategy and Emergent Strategy and exchanged ideas with class members.
The program is specially arranged as the integration of “think, know, practice and learn”. Participants shared cases of their experience with failed change. It was pointed out that the key factors of change include not only the willingness to change, but also how to integrate change and culture, how to manage change in personnel and effective approaches to change.
In addition to classroom learning, enterprise visits also presented members with new ideas and results. They visited Bombardier Inc., the top company in the international transportation equipment manufacturing industry, and spoke with the vice-president in charge of corporate strategy and international affairs. Bombardier’s ex-president was invited to the lecture and exchanged views on how to bring about change. He mentioned four points: first, never stop learning and make sure everyone understands your clear vision; second, is to understand very well your own and your rival’s cost structure; third, have an efficient organization, staff and incentive system; fourth, remember the company leader is the mentor and coach of change. Participants also visited the world’s largest aviation simulator maker CAE and had a dialogue with senior managers about company development and change.
The program is a journey of learning full of knowledge and practice. Just as Professor Song Hua said, “CMPM members make use of what they learned from change simulation, discussion, debate, meditation, decision…… in real-life enterprise management and communicate with members about solutions to problems, which is also the EMBA’s learning method at RBS.”
