Abstract:
Supply chain ethical failures often result from recurring unethical behaviors that culminate over time. This study seeks to understand how individuals behave across a series of decisions in supply chain management that invoke ethical considerations. Through a longitudinal experimental study and a specialized Bayesian model, we find that individuals are driven by ethical dynamics and generally exhibit a non-stationary behavioral pattern where they switch between an ethical decision and an unethical one. The probabilities of exhibiting such behavioral changes are non-trivial. We then demonstrate that firms may rely on ethics education to encourage not only ethical but also consistent conduct in supply chain management in the long run. In addition, ethics education is more effective in discouraging recurring unethical behaviors than in inducing consistent ethical behaviors. We also examine how the effects of ethics education may change over time as well as the impact of professional work experience on ethical consistency.
