ABSTRACT:
While traditional social identity theory of leadership focuses on team leader’s prototypicality of the team and an intragroup process underlying its influence on leadership effectiveness, we argue that team leader’s prototypicality of the organization affects leadership effectiveness through intergroup and interpersonal processes. We hypothesize that a team leader’s organizational prototypicality increases team performance and member performance by enhancing members’ perception of their
team’s status and their own organization-based self-esteem, respectively. Data of 288 employees working in 61 teams in six service industry firms in China provided support for our argument. The theoretical and practical implications of our results are discussed.
