ABSTRACT:
Qualitative case study offers a unique and powerful tool to theorise managerial phenomena. Yet, publishing qualitative research on top-tier management journals can be extremely challenging. This is particularly true for Chinese scholars who aspire to persuade editors and reviewers from distinctive cultural backgrounds with a Chinese case. In this talk, I will walk the audience through the 9-year journey of crafting a qualitative research based on Xiaomi which is recently published on the Academy of Management Journal. Specifically, I will talk about (1) how to carve out a nice niche of contributions to warrant publications at top-tier management journals; (2) how to deal with demanding reviewers strategically; (3) how to “show, not tell” a story of a Chinese firm to help editors and reviewers make sense of its contributions.
