ABSTRACT:
We propose a novel and easy-to-implement algorithm that helps represent the hidden topology of a production network as a family of inter-connected multiplex networks, with the network on each of the multi-layers having simple topology from which useful structural information can be easily read out. Prior knowledge on the input production network plays a critical role in the identification of the multilayers and the inter-layer connections, which makes our approach flexible and fills the gap between the knowledge-based and the data-oriented community detection algorithms. By applying the algorithm into the multi-regional input-output data in China, we demonstrate how the field knowledge on the industrial and regional agglomeration can help identify the hidden structures within the full supply chain.
