Abstract:

This paper studies the impact of China’s extra tariff on its import from US during US-China trade dispute using the disaggregated trade data from 2016 to 2019. We find rich evidence that China’s extra tariff is effective in that it significantly hampers the import from US, particularly the import of intermediate inputs, and further reduces the export to US given a positive link between import and export. The results are pronounced in both intensive and extensive margin. Such findings are robust by industry and by firm's ownership.
